Chris Murphy

United States Senator, United States Senate

Chris Murphy is a United States Senator from Connecticut and a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Appropriations Committee. Since his election to the Senate in 2012, Murphy has emerged as a leading voice on progressive foreign policy and negotiated major bipartisan agreements on gun control and immigration, including the most significant gun violence prevention legislation to be signed into law in a generation. More recently, Murphy has challenged the Trump administration’s assaults on our democracy and called on the Democratic party to adopt a new economic approach that breaks-up corporate monopolies, levels the playing field in a rigged economy, and roots out corruption. He is the author of a new book, The Crisis of the Common Good, about the fraying of America’s social fabric, and previously wrote The Violence Inside Us, a book about America’s unique history of violence and obsession with firearms. A lawyer by training, Murphy served for eight years in the Connecticut state legislature and six years in the House of Representatives. He graduated with honors from Williams College in Massachusetts, and received his law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law.
