Dr. Nils Schmid has been serving as Deputy Minister at the German Federal Ministry of Defence since May 2025. He studied law at the University of Tübingen and earned his doctorate with distinction in 2006. Schmid began his political career in 1997 when he entered the State Parliament of Baden-Württemberg, where he served until 2017. From 2009 to 2016, he was chairman of the SPD Baden-Württemberg. From 2011 to 2016, he held key government positions as Deputy Minister-President and Minister of Finance and Economics in Baden-Württenberg. He was also a member of the supervisory boards of Energie Baden-Württemberg, the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, the Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg, and the Landesbank Baden-Württemberg.
